Autumn Break 2026

Cranes over the bridge

day 1 - Prerow lighthouse 11.4 km

Walk to lighthouse - Darßer Ort - through the old forest of Darß from Prerow.

The bridge connecting Darß, Zingst with the mainland is a popular spot to observe birds, especially the cranes returning to their night rest after eating corn on the fields of the mainland.

Fantastic Night Sky - Saturn (and Titan)

Spent a while setting up the telescope for the first time. Finding Polaris and then chasing after Saturn without a motor. The Earth’s rotation is just too fast ;-) . After removing the cap, I finally was able to see Saturn and its rings nice an clear.

The photo below is more of an accident attempting to take a shot through the smartphone. Not until I saw the images the next morning did I realise that Saturn and I believe Titan were on them.

Position of Titan appears to be correct using the Skychart App.

day 2 - Barth

Coffee and cake in Barth and a little stroll in the garden of the Papenhof. Here there are plaques on the wall showing some of the history and commemorating Bogislaw XIII, Earl of Pomerania (Pommern).

day 3 - Walk along the Bodden to Zingst

Walk we haven’t done previously allong the Bodden near Zingst. And a walk to the pier continuing along the beach back to the starting point.

day 4 - Kranichfahrt from Prerow

Rain all day. Booked a “Kranichfahrt” from Prerow harbour to see the cranes flying overhead. Saw two sea eagles, many cormorants in trees and of course cranes overhead.

This is where the cranes rest at night to avoid the fox.
